Every year around this time you see everyone posting about their “New Year’s resolutions.” People making new goals. Whether it’s self-improvement, career goals, or weight loss goals and I think it’s great! I say if it helps you to start somewhere on the road to change, why not make it the beginning of a New Year. I don’t normally make resolutions for myself though, mostly because I always seem to have epic fails when I do that at the beginning of a new year. lol Instead I constantly try to re evaluate my life, my marriage, my friendships and my career and think…how can I improve these relationships, these things. How can I be a better person. I am far from perfect so I always feel like I can improve myself in some way.
My husband and I have been talking alot about that lately. About what we want for our marriage, for our family, for each other. He is going into the third year of his promotional products company My Smart Shirt. His company makes embroidered shirts that companies have their employes wear, all of the stuff that radio stations give away, school shirts for kids or t-shirts and items for their extra-curricular activities, shirts for charity walks etc. You get the idea. His company is focused on customer service AND giving back. He gives 5cents from every shirt he sells to the charity SERV International. His motto is Buy a Shirt = Feed a Child. I love that!
It got me thinking about how good it feels when you make a difference in the lives of others. Whether it’s donating your time to a local charity, supporting a cause you believe in, having coffee with a good friend or even someone you don’t know that well or even volunteering at your local church. A hand-written note left on someone’s door or mailed to them. Buying someone’s coffee or food order behind you when you are in the drive through. These are all things I have been thinking of lately. Especially since our ten year old daughter is getting older. I want her to see her parents being a good example of giving and helping others so that she will feel inspired to do the same. Lead by example right?
So what am I doing? This first week of the New Year I am helping with Wellspring Living and the issue of sex-trafficking. My husband and I have actually been involved with this organization since shortly after we met. My friend Mary Frances, the founder of Wellspring Living, has written a pretty powerful book called Make It Zero and even launched a movement called #MakeItZero. (My hubby made the shirts!) It’s about making sex-trafficking, poverty and everything bad having to do with children…ZERO, as in every single child should be safe-guarded. If you think sex-trafficking only happens in other countries like that Liam Neeson movie Taken, boy are you wrong. Trust me, because I thought the same exact thing. But this disgusting, vile, stomach turning sex-trafficking of our children is happening HERE! Here in our own backyards and it is not only scaring the crap out of me but it is breaking my heart. If you have children, your OWN child could be at risk for this and I don’t know about you but I not only want MY children to be safe but I want ALL children to be safe. Because they are just that…children.
So, please read Make It Zero which comes out TODAY. Share it with EVERYONE you know and become part of a movement.
Here are a few very super easy ways to get involved:
- Buy the BOOK.
- Attend the Launch Party! Why? Cus I am also emceeing the event THIS Thursday night January 7th. 😉 Details below!
- Follow the movement on social media by clicking the links below!
“If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him…We need not wait to see what others do.” – Gandhi
Sure, I know I could drop a few pounds, be a little more patient with my daughters, be a better wife but those are things that are always on my mind and things I try and improve constantly. I want to focus this year on doing things that will not only improve me and my life but will also make a difference in the lives of others and the world. A lofty goal for 2016? Yep, but if not now, when? Hope you will feel encouraged to make this the year you get involved with whatever speaks to your heart!
I posted this on Facebook recently because the words to this For King and Country song really hit me differently when I heard it at the start of the New year. Seems like simple words to live by this New Year and always!
Love like I’m not scared
Give when it’s not fair
Live life for another
Take time for a brother
Fight for the weak ones
Speak out for freedom
Find faith in the battle
Stand tall but above it all
Fix my eyes on You.
